purple larkspur (Delphinium tricorne)

This is the inflorescence of a purple larkspur (Delphinium tricorne). Delphinium species are common throughout the United States. Different species can be annual, biennial, or perrenial (this refers to their lifespan lasting 1, 2, or multiple years). This particular specimen originated from Indiana. They are common in forest understories and relatively moist sites. There are numerous species of Delphinium and many are poisonous and contain numerous diterpenoid alkaloids which if consumed in sufficient quantities can sicken and even kill livestock. These toxic effects are strongest in new growth and seeds and decline as the vegetation ages. It is less clear how wildlife are affected by this species and whether they utilize it as a food source.
