tulip poplar tree (Liriodendron tulipifera)

Carpels (ovary and styles) are arranged along an elongate receptacle in a cone-like fashion. This structure originally tricked botanists into thinking that it was a primitive flower and possibly a relict species of early flowering plants (angiosperms). Molecular research has revealed that this and related species are not some sort of transitional species connecting angiosperms with gemnosperms.

alternate video format (H.264)

This time-lapse is a combination of three sequences of the two specimens. Two used a Canon Digital Rebel controlled by a laptop running the program RemoteCapture 2.7 taking one frame every 3 minutes. The other was taken using a Nikon Coolpix 5400 controlled by a Digisnap 2000 taking one frame every 4 minutes. Each full sequence was shot over approximately 11.5 hours.
