willow (Salix sp.)

There are hundreds of species of willow which can be found throughout much of the northern hemisphere. Native Americans throughout much of America used willow as a medicine. Willow contain salicylic acid a precursor for aspirin. Willow wood has also been used to make fibers, string, rope, etc. Willow can also be used to make wicker to construct baskets. Because of their rapid growth, they are being grown as a biofuel and also used in reclamation/restoration. Willow has many other uses and is important forage for wildlife like moose.
